birds nests and thatched roofs have long been a source of wonder to me as they bring together fibres and found materials to provide security and warmth for their occupants - man and animal alike. i can still remember my first discovery of a robin's nest. inside its carefully woven form lay the impossibly tiny blue eggs within which a living being was growing! it wasn't until i was an adult that i can say that i saw a real thatched roof. here's a beautiful image of a thatched roof using heather . . .
patrick dougherty has taken the idea of using natural materials and weaving them into forms a step further with his stick sculptures . . . when i see these i think it would be truly magical to live inside a house made of woven sticks . . .wait a moment didn't a certain little piggy try that once?
here’s a really good video profile of patrick in which he explains how he constructs his stick sculptures . . .
there's much more if you visit patrick's homepage and for more extraordinary stick sculptures by artists from around the world you must see this.
