skins

there is nothing, there is always nothing.

it has to be filled
with a new, fruitful
space,
then downward
tumbles yesterday
as in a well
falls yesterday's water,
into the cistern
of all still without voice or fire.

all words excerpted from "past" by pablo neruda

hello renee!! those words were in my head as i took these pictures. i was going to use them to begin the piece but i went searching for neruda's words instead. steven

oa.s your english is good! spring is a time of early morning colours and early evening colours. they tend to be soft and kind. neruda's writing is something i try to use with care because it is so fine. i'm glad you like it also. steven

hope on this day the sky (as renee intuited) the sky was falling down. the image you like is of the almost end of the day reflected in our not to be opened for a few months yet pool. steven

Neruda, one of the great masters.
If these are your pictures they are magnificent.

So. Are the clouds skins, like from garlic or onions, that are peeled from the sky and drop to the earth's water?

One of my favourite poets steven, although I do sometimes wonder whether the translation is exactly what he meant to say. Poetry is an area I think where translation canbe difficult. Lovely photos too.

you and pablo make a great team ;)

ruth - i think it's like skin wearing away and revealing more and more of the essence of something. steven

weaver - i too wonder at translations. a single word can turn the meaning of a piece of writing in an entirely different direction. so i take what i see and assume it too has its own authority. steven

goodness pauline - thankyou! steven

there IS always nothing.

I love it! And that final photo. A sunset in a puddle. You certainly have an eye for seeing the beauty that alway surrounds us and fills up the nothing that's always always there.

thanks, steven
